In 1908 work at the mill ceased and Nutley joined the growing army of abandoned mills. In 1928 Lady Castle Stewart acquired the mill and within a short time she had taken steps to have the whole structure strengthened. Brick peirs with steel girders were built to support the front and stout wooden posts supported the back. Nutley remained in this condition, slowly being eaten away by woodworm. In 1968 local man Tony Turner rediscovered the mill, sought and gained permission to start work to renovate the mill. Tony was a descendent of a Mr. Stevenson, brickmaker, who had built adjacent Windmill Cottage and had helped the miller in the 1860s.
