A cat sat at the door of the mill, looking out on the world with vast contentment.    He was fat and well favoured. I have a respect for cats who earn their living, just as I have for human kind who earn their bread before they eat it. This cat did not eat bread, or not much of it, although in a sense he was in the bread business: he ate mice. The miller tells me that wherever there is flour-meal, there are mice, and in a mill where grain is being ground mice are in abundance; so I learned that Grim was a useful assistant to Hammond, and, for a good reason, was a fat and happy cat.

John Shepperd has contacted us as he has been investigating mills around Battle. Watermills of course predated the use of wind, and were prevalent in Saxon times - the Domesday record indicates at least 1000. Battle had Mills associated with Blast Furnaces, some on streams, and some run by hammer ponds. No doubt a good mill stream would have driven mills for Corn, Cloth beating, Hammering iron stone or charcoal for gun powder, and Bellows. Battle had recorded water mills at Powder Mills, Sedlescombe on the upper Brede, and at Whatlington (see picture). The latter mill was dismantled in the 1930s, but the elaborate sluices and mill pool survive. Latterly, like the Robertsbridge mill, water power was supplemented by steam. Regarding Windmills, there were three at different times on the turnpike road south of the town - at "Telham" dismantled in the 1950s, at Black Horse a mile further south, and at Bredsell farm. Up Caldbek hill, the last of the King's Head Mills is still extant and was latterly called the Black Mill, although since it became a private residence, it is painted white. A second Mill stood nearer the road, but was burned down. There was also apparently a white mill further down the road nearer the town. Obviously, mills came and went over the centuries in scores, and it would be impossible to catalogue them all.
